The Honored Guest Bed and Breakfast boasts an impressive architectural heritage. The house was built in 1910 as the guesthouse on Ledgewood Estate, the country home of the renowned architect, James Renwick, Jr. (St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Smithsonian Institute). In a rather dramatic departure from Renwick’s signature Gothic Revival style, his family chose to celebrate the austere simplicity of the American Foursquare / Prairie House design of the equally renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Perched atop a 3-½ acre parcel of manicured lawns, towering evergreens, glorious old maples and perennial gardens, today’s honored guests will enjoy design elements retained from the Arts and Crafts period. Unusually large vertical-paned blown glass windows grace the first floor, dark oak molding and gorgeous hardwood floors are found throughout, and, typical of Wright’s designs, the natural surroundings outdoors are incorporated into the house’s interior design for both visual pleasure and temperature control. In deference to Wright’s vision, the oversized living room is now furnished with authentic Arts and Crafts pieces.

Any time of the day, guests will find a warm and welcome place to relax and visit in either the living room or out on our unique front porch . Tea and Grandmother’s secret recipe cookies are served every afternoon either before the fireplace in the winter or outdoors in the shade of the tall evergreens in the summer. At night, when guests return from their evening out, they find their beds turned down, the curtains drawn and a carafe of water and a chocolate at bedside. Every effort is made to ensure a comfortable and pleasurable experience here at The Honored Guest.

Your mornings in the country begin with a full, delicious breakfast elegantly served in the formal dining room. You’ll find that breakfasts at the Honored Guest are a wonderful part of your stay. A wide assortment of teas always awaits you and the coffee is dark, rich and available all morning long. Because every effort is made to buy locally grown fruits and vegetables, our menu changes with the seasons. Where possible, organic produce is used and, as the demands and tastes of our guests moves more towards healthy eating, we also feature low-fat dishes on some mornings. Special dietary restrictions are adhered to in all cases if advance notice is provided. Please include that information when you book your stay.

The Honored Guest offers a tea service daily at 4:30 p.m. In the summer months, nothing revives your energy and spirit better than a frosty glass of iced-tea served in the shade of our tall pines out on the knoll. Come cooler months, teas served by the fireplace warm your toes and heart while a choice of hot drinks warms your insides. There are always treats to eat. The Honored Guest is not permitted to serve alcoholic beverages but we can provide you with set-ups should you choose to bring your own
